Founded as Sat-X-Port in 1983, John's Antennas has been on the cutting edge of Direct-to-Home television reception for almost 40 years.
In the early days, Sat-X-Port was formed as a joint venture between Robert Hooper, a former design engineer at Microdyne and co-founder of Raydx Satellite Systems, LLC, an Ocala manufacturer of the large 10 Ft. mesh satellite dishes, and John Pearce. While concentrating his efforts on developing the overseas market that was coming, to support his young family, John was among the first in the nation to begin selling and installing the new Television Reception Only (TVRO) dishes in Florida to customers in Marion, Lake, Levy and surrounding counties.
International Satellite & Antenna Service had arrived. For the next few years, the satellite industry grew at a rapid pace. After all, you could get all the new cable channels, like HBO, Showtime, CNN, ESPN and many more for free! John spent every extra moment he could furthering his education on this new industry. At John's first certification class presented by a Denver based satellite equipment distributor, Echostar, at their new East coast distribution center. It was a small tin building in Knoxville where John learned about installing, aligning and troubleshooting satellite dishes from Echostar's founder, Charlie Ergin.
Charlie would go on to become the co-founder, Chairman and CEO of DISH Network. John's relationship with Charlie and his companies (including SLING, HughesNet and AirTV) continues to this day.
In January of 1986, the satellite TV party came to an abrupt STOP. General Instrument introduced the Video-Cypher, HBO scrambled their signal and the era Free Tv was coming to an end. Orders for satellite TV sales plummeted, Raydx went into bankruptcy, and John pondered closing his doors.
It wasn't long before John began working with General Instrument and Uniden selling the new Video-Cypher Decoders to (reluctant) TVRO dish owners. It seemed that they were willing to pay for the premium services, just like the cable customers.
At the same time, he found that many customers didn't want, or need all these new channels, but were content just getting the local broadcast channels with a traditional Over-the-Air Television Antenna. Yes, good old ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS. Also in 1986, a new national broadcaster entered the market, FOX Television.
John continued selling and installing TV Antenna Towers along with Satellite Dishes.
In 1989, after briefly working for another local dealer, John opened his Ocala showroom/office on Highway 200 in the Jasmine Plaza. John, along with his wife Rebecca, his father, Joesph Pearce, and a friend and employee they soon became one of the Nation's Top Selling Satellite and Antenna dealers.
The industry continued to grow and prosper for the next few years, and on June 17, 1994, The U.S. Satellite Broadcasting Company (USSB), Hughes and Thompson Electronics (RCA) launched DIRECTV. John was at the celebration at Cowboy Maloney's in Jacksonville, Mississippi the day they launched the new service. Although DIRECTV would not permit sales in Florida stores for 3 months, by midnight on that day, John had one of the first public displays of DIRECTV in Florida.
On the day DIRECTV opened up sales in Florida, John had 168 systems sold and ready to be installed. It wasn't long before John was recognized as one of the Nation's Top 100 DIRECTV Dealers.
In 1996, Charlie Ergen launched DSIH Network. John, as a longtime friend and customer, soon began selling DISH Network along with DIRECTV and Over the Air Antennas.
International Satellite & Antenna Service expanded their fleet to 14 trucks, hired and trained numerous employees and expanded their installation and service area to 17 Central Florida Counties. John has received numerous Top 100 dealer awards from DISH over the years, and continues to feature them in his showroom, along with the latest technology from Blue Sky Antennas, AIR TV, Google Nest and many others.
In 1998 International Satellite & Antenna Service incorporated under the name A-SAT Inc. (A Satellite and Antenna Technician). The new shorter name saved time and ink filling out forms and became the parent company to International Satellite & Antenna Service; Florida Digital Sign (Printing, Direct Mail, Graphics Design, Electronic Menu Boards, Web Sites, Custom Printer Apparel) and John's Antennas.
In 1999, International Satellite& Antenna Service began selling and installing HughesNet, the new Satellite Internet System. Finally, "Not-So" High-Speed Internet (1.5 Mbps Down) made its way to rural America. The satellite internet industry experienced many growing pains through-out the years. In 2007, Viasat entered the market with WildBlue. Speeds increased, data plans grew, and today, we have reasonably high-speed service available (up to 100 Mbps download in some areas) to rural customer not served by Cable of Telco (DSL). In 2007, A-sat was recognized as the Number 1 Dealer in the Nation by Wildblue's distributor, DSI.
In recent months, International Satellite & Antenna Service entered into an agreement to become the wholesale distributor for SKY BLUE ANTENNAS line and with a Back Haul cellular provider to bring you mobile internet (www.,mypersonalwifi.com coming soon). John's Antennas, and this web site are the entry into the direct sales of the SKY BLUE ANTENNA line, and is developing a state-wide installation network of dealers and installers.
